Quick Overview

Return & Earn (R&E) is a New South Wales Government initiative that aims to have 100% of eligible recyclable containers go through their deposit system. This project's scope was to understand why people were not engaging in the scheme and how we could increase usage.

What we found

What’s stopping people from using the R&E?

  • They didn’t know it existed

  • Return points too far (not convenient)

  • Don’t know the benefits of R&E vs. the yellow bins at home.

Why do people use R&E?

  • Help the planet

  • Get money from returning bottles

Usability Testing

Our solution

The reasoning behind our approach was:

  • The app was the way most people engaged with R&E

  • Get the people who are already using the app to “spread the word”

  • Use already existing infrastructure that's working and build upon it with more features

  • Use people’s motivations to entice engagement

Key learnings

While researching, we found it difficult to sift through all the information we gathered. It did make us feel overwhelmed at the start. We conquered this feeling by making sure that we had our goal front and centre, as well as keeping our tasks to a deadline using Trello to keep track.
